Andy's Perspective on Kids Today

Since returning full-time to the WCTA, it has given me the opportunity to share some of my invaluable experiences that I gained from traveling around the world on the ITF/WTA tour.

Many may characterize me as an 'in-your-face' type of coach. I feel that I am fair and I try to get the most out of each individual student. I care. In a way I teach them there are no limits and when you give it 110% with effort and attitude you'll surprise yourself in what you can accomplish.

One thing that is sometimes taken for granted by all is the fact that we are lucky enough to be surrounded by a beautiful setting and are given all the tools necessary to reach any goal that we set. The kids need to remember to use these tools to the fullest. I feel that whether the kids go on to play high-school tennis, get a college scholarship, or turn pro - it's only an aftereffect stemming from the priceless lessons and discipline learned along the way. Our job as coaches is sometimes impeded by parents' interference.

Our main goal is to give the students a sense of work ethic, pride in themselves, and having the will to succeed. If any of these principles are imprinted into any of the student's minds, we have reached our overall goal in teaching self-discipline, self-sufficiency, and self-pride.

I strongly feel one of the ingredients missing nowadays in tennis is the focus and dedication it takes in order to reach any goal and get better. Commitment means putting the work in on a consistent basis. Kids today shouldn't have anything to complain about. The big picture is that you're only stopping yourself when you choose to take shortcuts. Each student needs to remember their individual goals. In order to reach those goals kids should answer the question, "What can I do now, in this present moment to work towards the goals that I have set for myself?"

A good tool for everyone is picking a person you look up to and aspire to be like. The reason for choosing this person may be that you admire their attitude, personality, or anything thing else about them. Then by using that mental picture you envision yourself being and becoming that person. That encompasses the way that you hold yourself, your everyday choices, and your overall outlook.

Here's one of my favorite quotes from the great Vince Lombardi:

"The difference between a successful person and others is
not lack of strength, not lack of knowledge, but rather a lack of will."
